In Preparation for Digitizing
The digital collection will be complemented by new regional publications in electronic form. In 2011, it is planned to digitize the following library materials:
Rules of the Society of St. Cyril and Methodius
for Istria
printed by I. Seraschin in
Pula, 1894
The particular significance of this booklet is that it is among the first publications printed in the Croatian language in Istria. It was printed in Pula in 1894 at the printing press owned by the Seraschin family, the first printing house in Istria which, apart from books in Italian, also printed books in Croatian. The booklet contains the rules of the Society of St. Cyril and Methodius for Istria, an association for the development of a Croatian and Slovene school system in Istria, founded in 1893, when the K and K (Kaiser und Koenig, i.e. Imperial and Royal) Regency approved its rules. The activities of the Society of St. Cyril and Methodius for Istria represented an expression of the Croatian national revival in Istria and its educational aspirations, and focused on opening Croatian schools in the region.
Rules of the Pula Reading Room Society
printed by I. Seraschin in Pula, 1894
The first Croatian society in Pula was the Reading Room, established in 1869, the aim of which was organized reading and the spreading of the written word in Croatian among members of the Croatian ethnic community in Pula. The first Rules of the Pula Reading Room in Croatian and German were published in Pula in 1870. The first Reading Room ceased its activities in the 1880s and was restarted when Dr Matko Laginja was elected president of the Society. The new Rules of the Pula Reading Room Society were printed in the printing house owned by the Seraschin family in Pula in 1894. The book contains the ex libris of Josip Bratulić, a member of the Croatian Academy of Sciences and Arts.
Notizie storiche di Pola
[testi di Pietro Kandler … [et al.]. [Pola] : Municipio, 1876. (Parenzo : Tipografia di Gaetano Coana).
This book is one of the earliest printed editions in Istria representing a documented history of Pula and the surrounding area until the mid-19th century. The book contains rich archival material on the history of Pula and surrounding sites (Fažana, Medulin, Premantura, etc.) and was compiled by prominent archaeologist and historian Pietro Kandler (Trieste, 1804-1872). Throughout his life, Kandler published numerous short papers on Istria in epistolary form in weekly and daily newspapers in Trieste. These contain an abundance of historical, archaeological and epigraphic data. He also left rich archival material (today stored at the National Archives in Trieste and elsewhere), some of which was posthumously published in the monograph Notizie storiche di Pola (1876). Some excerpts from the book Codice Diplomatico Istriano (CDI, Istrian Diplomatic Code, a collection of documents related to the region of Istria and Trieste in the period between 50 AD and 1526, collected and prepared for printing by Kandler) were also published in the monograph. The book was printed at Gaetano Coana's press in Poreč.
The postcard collection
The postcard collection currently contains 435 items, and we continually seek to supplement it by procuring new items. We intend to gradually digitize the whole postcard collection by thematic unit.
Thematic units in preparation:
A) postcards created from photographs taken by professional photographers (Alois Beer, R. Marincovich, the ‘Sintich & Co’ and ‘Flora’ photographic studios);
B) printers and publishers (F.W. Schrinner, M. Clapis, M. Fischer, A. i G. Rude)
C) time periods (19th century, between the wars, etc.)
